Membership Requirements


To join our team, prospective members must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: Be 18 years or older, or 14-18 to join our Explorer group.
  • Physical Fitness: Maintain good physical fitness.
  • Driver’s License: Possess a valid driver’s license or have a reliable ride.
  • Weather Preparedness: Be capable of traveling safely in all weather conditions.
  • Outdoor Skills: Have or be willing to learn basic outdoor and survival skills.
  • Local Knowledge: Have or be willing to gain knowledge of local and regional parks, trails, and areas.
  • Availability: Have a flexible schedule that allows for emergency call-outs 24/7, year-round.
  • Commitment: Be willing to commit to at least 4 years of service. 1-2 training days per month, and call-outs when you are available. 
  • Dedication: Be passionate about helping those in need.
  • Training: Be willing to complete required training and attend scheduled training sessions and meetings.


Gear and Equipment:

  • Rescue 101 SAR provides the majority of the essential gear for its members, including specific equipment necessary for search and rescue operations.
  • Members are expected to supply some personal items such as a boots, clothing, and other personal items. The cost of personal gear may range from $100 to $300, depending on your preferences.
  • There is an annual membership fee of $60 per person, prorated at the time of joining and billed in full on January 1st each year.


Application Process:

We accept applications year-round through the link below. After reviewing your application, you will be invited for an intake interview, followed by a recruitment hike to assess your skills and teamwork abilities in a SAR setting. If selected, you will be offered conditional membership as a Member in Training (MIT). As an MIT, you must complete Ground Search and Rescue courses and attend regular training sessions before being considered for Active Member status.

  5. We have members with additional training in rope rescue, grain bin rescue, ice rescue, water rescue, machinery rescue, collapse rescue, and US&R. 
  6. We have Special Event Teams for Extreme Races, Festivals, and Fairs. 
  7. We have you covered! We are insured through VFIS, the largest provider of insurance, education, and consulting services to emergency service organizations such as fire departments, ambulance, and rescue squads in the nation. 
  8. We hold memberships with: (NASAR) National Association for Search and Rescue, (OSARA) Ohio Search and Rescue Association, (NAEMT) National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, (NVFC) National Volunteer Fire Council, and Ohio Volunteer Organizations Assisting in Disasters (Pending) 
  9. We train year-round to ensure all of our members are ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. 
  10. Training is at no cost or a low cost for classes we bring in outside instructors.

Previous search and rescue or emergency service experience are not necessary; new members will be expe

We appreciate your interest in joining Rescue 101 SAR. We are a 100% volunteer organization and do not have any paid staff.  All of our members are required to have a background check conducted by the Sheriff's Office, where they reside. Previous search and rescue or emergency service experience are not necessary; new members will be expected to have basic camping, hiking, and other outdoor skills. All members must provide their outdoor clothing and personal equipment. Prospective members must live within the state of Ohio.   There are minimum attendance requirements for all members. Failure to meet minimum attendance may result in loss of field status and possible dismissal from the team. Rescue 101 Search and Rescue provides emergency services for the citizens of Ohio, so members will be expected to respond to callouts when available.  


WORKING CONDITIONS

Work performed is sometimes in stressful conditions.  


All Members are on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week.  


SAR is performed in all weather conditions and all types of terrain.  


Working conditions are frequently hazardous due to weather conditions (snow, high wind, rain, hail, tornados, flooding, lightning, extreme cold, etc.), terrain hazards (rock falling, steep/vertical terrain, lakes, rivers, thick vegetation, etc.), potential hazards of wild animals, and potential hazards from violent subjects.


JOB FUNCTIONS 

Perform specialized functions according to training/ability. These may include but are not limited to advanced medical treatment, radio communications, search dog operations, traffic control, tracking, sign cutting, rock climbing, flood stage monitoring, severe weather spotting & reporting.
